Designed in 1963 by Gerrit Rietveld, a Dutch designer, the Steltman Chair is a recognizable contemporary furniture item that embodies the values of the De Stijl art movement. This chair is well-known for its unique, simple design, which has strong primary color use and geometric lines. Originally commissioned by Steltman jewelers in The Hague, the 1963 Steltman Chair served as sitting for engaged couples looking through wedding bands.

At first glance, the attention was drawn to the two mirrored seats placed in front of a jewel-filled exhibit. These seats allowed consumers to choose their wedding bands and jewelry. A symbolic meaning of two distinct, opposing shapes coming together to form a unity was also assigned to the chairs in this context.
